Slam Poetry
The popularity of Slam poetry is growing enormously! It is a unique style that allows for a lot of creative freedom on behalf of the poet. At the same time, it sticks to one traditional belief about poetry--
It is meant to be spoken.
Remember how much recognition used to be given to rap battles?
Slam poetry events are thought of being very similar. People write their own poems and use it to compete against against another poet.
The term Slam poetry is often used interchangeably with Spoken Word poetry. The two styles are similar in the way they are written and performed for an audience, but Slam poetry tends to be more dramatic, sometimes using music, body language, or props.
This is also where the term "Poetry Slams" come from.
Young adults are becoming increasingly favorable of Slam poetry and use it to share their messages and thoughts on a variety of topics including, body image, bullying, racism, anxiety, adolescent development, sexuality, violence, politics, school, and many others.
